There are two very simple ways to become a better writer.

  1. Read more
  2. Write more

It really is this easy: the people who write well are almost always the people who have read the most.  Reading is to a writer what a workout in the gym is to a top sportsman.  You wouldn’t expect Wayne Rooney to be a top footballer if he didn’t keep fit, would you? And you can’t expect to become a great writer until you become a great reader!  The best writers at the Falcons School for Girls are voracious readers, often working their way through a book a week.

When you read a book you’re being taught by an expert writer. Who better to teach you to write an action scene than Anthony Horowitz?

  • Reading does more to improve your grammar and punctuation than a thousand worksheets.
  • You’ll be able to parody other author’s styles if you read.  Parodying means ‘writing in the style of…’
  • Enjoyment!  If you enjoy reading you are more likely to enjoy your writing, and you’ll want to work hard to become a better writer.

Best of all, reading will give you ideas for writing your own stories!
