No. 1 – David Almond
David Almond has won so many book prizes that he must spend half his life polishing! Read Skellig and The Fire-Eaters today!

No. 2 – Phillip Pullman
Year Three and Four girls will love The Firemaker’s Daughter and I Was A Rat. You’ll doubtless read the His Dark Materials trilogy in Year 5 or 6, but don’t forget to read The Ruby In The Smoke, his adventure set in the Victorian period.

No.3 – Geraldine McCaughrean
Her clever retelling of the story of Noah’s Ark, Not the End of the World, is a brilliant, challenging read, ideal when you are preparing for 11+, as is The White Darkness and Peter Pan In Scarlett.

No.4 – Michael Morpurgo
The former Children’s Laureate is famed for Private Peaceful, The Wreck of the Zanzibar and the dazzling adventure Kensuke’s Kingdom.

No.5 – Marcus Sedgwick
Year Six pupils should read everything by Marcus Sedgwick – start with The Foreshadowing, The Book of Dead Days and My Swordhand is Singing.
